CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The Easter holiday had arrived, and there was more going on than I felt comfortable with. Paityn, Bradley, and Liam were with us for four days, leaving Monday afternoon. Elijah and Bethany would have Easter Sunday brunch at Bethany’s mom’s house and the second half at our house. Oliver stayed in California with Chloe and her family, but he was planning to come home sometime in late summer. Owen would be here from Saturday to Monday morning, which I was grateful for, but I couldn’t keep my thoughts from drifting to the fact that this would be Harley’s very last Easter.

I looked back on all of the other holidays since we first had her as a puppy. Her first Halloween with us, she was a pumpkin. She looked so over the top adorable in that costume that we made her a pumpkin every year after. The first Thanksgiving, she could not understand at all why she wasn’t eating turkey too, and that concept never really sunk in. It took her until her fifth Independence Day to stop shaking and whining when she would hear fireworks, but she would still hide the minute the first one went off. All of those memories coursed through my mind as I moved through my day.

I supposed I had two options. I could spend the rest of her days in agony, anticipating the hour I would have to say goodbye to my girl forever, or I could choose to spend the remainder of her life smothering her with love. The obvious choice was the latter.

My purse began to vibrate on the granite countertop. I unzipped the front pocket to see my phone beaming with Owen’s face. How does he know when I need him?

“Hey! How are you?” I answered, attempting to put aside my sadness and muster a delightful tone.

“I’m doing well. How are you holding up?”

“I’m hanging in there. When do you get in? I cannot wait to see your handsome face.”

“I should be in Buckingham by noon today, babe. Want to grab lunch at the bistro after I stop home to drop off my bags and see my parents?”

“That sounds perfect, Owen!”
